From Braunwald, take the high balcony path to the resort of Urnerboden. The Urnerboden valley is one of the most dramatic in the alps, with a large flat bottom covered in typical pasture and farmland, with impressively tall walls on both sides, rock faces towering above you and a long and straight road splitting the valley in two.

Safety information

The weather can change rapidly in the Alps, always check the forecast before you start the days hiking and pack appropriately. If the weather is too rough, do not begin the trek.

There can be left over snow drifts early in the season, they have sometimes melted underneath - particularly if it covers moving water. Just because it looks solid, it doesn't mean it is. Exercise extreme caution when crossing such snow drifts and if possible walk around them to where you can see the solidity of the ground clearly.

Some of the ground can be uneven, with rocky/pebbly paths and even ice. Ensure you have suitable footwear with ankle support, and step cautiously when needed.

Much of the path is on clifftops and there has been some erosion, for this reason, the path is sometimes unclear, be careful of the drop and of loose rocks and edges to the cliffs.

Some of the gates are cattle deterrents and are electrified, be sure to use the plastic handles and reattach the cable to the housing when you pass through, they are 12 volts, so not dangerous but very unpleasant.

Tips and hints

Food and Drink

Braunwald has plenty of spots for food and drink, but after that, there are no stops until Urnerboden so do make sure you have water and snacks.

Points of Interest

Braunwald

A quaint little vehicle free hamlet, perched on the clifftops with beautiful views of the surrounding mountain ranges and a selection of quality shops and cafes.

Urnerboden river

This river runs through the valley, winding through meadows, pine forest and stony paths it is unbelievably clear. The water is crystalline, and you can see all of the underwater life from river trout to interesting flora. The temptation for a dip is strong, but be warned - the water is cold!

Urnerboden valley

This huge valley, framed with towering cliff faces that fall steeply to a wide flat bottom, is visually inspiring.  The wide grassy plane at the bottom is home to a few villages and some farm animals, and in the winter the population drops to 24 with snowfall of up to 3 metres.
