Romantic riverside and canyon paths

Klöntal is one of the most beautiful valleys in the foothills of the Alps. Its gentle grace in the midst of a breathtaking mountain landscape has fascinated not only alpinists but also artists. As a supposedly ideal landscape, the valley has been repeatedly depicted by Romantic painters and praised by poets. The jewel of the valley, the Klöntaler See, owes its formation to two landslides that dammed the valley floor at the Schwammhöchi. The Löntsch had to carve a new outflow through this rock mass. The entire fjord-like incised lake, including its outflow through the wild Löntsch gorge down to the Linthtal, is one of the most beautiful mountain hikes in the Glarnerland.

The starting point is Plätz at the western tip of the lake. From the inn, stroll a few hundred meters into the valley to the Chlü bridge and then keep left along the entire length of the narrow lakeside path. Squeezed between the water and the Glärnischwänden, it winds its way through the forest and along gravel bays, passes tumbling waterfalls and striking rocky outcrops. Behind the flat delta of the Dunggelaui, the rocky mountain range of the Bärentritt surprises. Later the lakeside path passes the Gessner monument hidden under trees and ends behind the Güntlenau campsite at the artificially raised dam. There the romantic Tobelweg next to the Löntsch begins in the forest. Four times its wooden footbridges cross the mountain stream lined with bizarre boulders. A view from the stone arch bridge shows the dizzying depths to which the stream has burrowed into the landslide material. Later, at Kohlgrüebli, the route branches off to the left onto the Treppensteig, crosses the gorge at the most impressive point and shortly afterwards reaches the Staldengarten mountain inn. The route continues from Staldengarten parallel to the Klöntalerstrasse on the Rütigasse, which later runs left under the rocky ridge of the Grundkopf towards Netstal. Always close to the Löntsch, the hiking trail leads to the Netstal train station.
